At least seven House Democrats have pledged not to support any health care bill that does not include a public option. One of them is our own Congressman Phil Hare. As he explains in this video a bill without a public option is "like a car without a motor."

There was a recent article in the New Yorker that I found very informative. The Cost Conundrum is long but I believe highly worth the read.
The author argues that a public option ultimately won't make any difference; he believes the key to health care reform is moving away from a fee-for-service system (where doctors and hospitals are paid more money for doing more tests and procedures) and toward an incentive-based payment system (where doctors and hospitals are financially rewarding for having good patient outcomes).
I still think that the most equitable system is the single payer system. I believe it is H.R. 656 that needs to be supported. The other option is insurance corporation reform. These companies have become rich and richer ( with stimulus funds) with tax payers money. Blaming rising costs on doctors and patients blames the victims of the system.
I remember the Clinton health care initive where the insurance industry dug in their heels, ran Harry and Louise television ads, we ended up with nothing at all. We need something passed that guarantees affordable coverage for everyone--everything else is of secondary importance.
